You can call me Kait
As a Boston-based low brass performer and educator, I bring a wealth of experience and passion to my craft.
As a performer:
I enjoy programming and performing music that speaks to my lived experience, heritage, and creative interests. It is important to me to play music by living composers, especially those who are gender-marginalized. Although euphonium is my primary instrument, I am also well-versed and studied in contrabass and bass tuba. I have lengthy experience playing in collegiate and community wind ensembles, and I am looking forward to developing more as a chamber musician in Boston!
Before diving into the professional world of brass performance, I was a member of the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps from 2013-2018. During my time as a baritone performer and drum major within the corps, I developed attitudes and techniques around performance that continue to shape me today.
As a scholar:
I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Brass Performance at Boston University under the tutelage of Mike Roylance. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music (2019) and a Master of Arts in Music (2024) with concentrations in euphonium performance and wind band conducting from the University of Central Florida. My primary instructors at UCF were Dr. Ben Vasko (tuba/euphonium), Dr. Luis Fred (euphonium), Claude Kashnig (euphonium), and Dr. Scott Lubaroff (conducting).
In support of my master’s degree, I was a graduate teaching assistant for the UCF Bands program, in which I provided administrative assistance as well as instructed the UCF Marching Knights, guest conducted the UCF Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, and co-instructed the UCF University Band.
In March 2024, I participated in two conferences where I presented academic lectures on my current research projects — “Breaking the Brass Ceiling” and “If You Can Sing It, You Can Play It.” I am looking forward to further developing these projects and sharing them with broader audiences soon.
Throughout the summer of 2024, I participated as a research intern with the Boulanger Initiative!
As an instructor:
Since 2019, I have been active as a private instructor, marching band technician, and leadership clinician. I have presented clinics and masterclasses across the country, notably in Orlando, Atlanta, Dallas, and Nashville. From 2019-2023, I was on the brass staff of the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, and in 2024, I taught the euphonium section of the Music City Drum and Bugle Corps.
In Fall 2024, I joined the faculties of the University of Massachusetts - Lowell and Bentley University as the Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium and Pep Band Director, respectively.
My private students (euphonium + tuba) have found success in all-state, college, and drum corps auditions. I love helping my students reach their goals through my holistic and creative approach to musicianship and success.
